Private Health Fund Rebates

Most private health funds pay a rebate for psychology fees under their extras . Please check with reception as to whether the practitioner you are seeing has a health fund provider number enabling you to claim. Health rebates vary depending on your fund and level of cover so check with your fund for details. Some examples of Private Health Funds are: Medibank, HCF, Bupa, NIB and AHM.

Medicare Rebates

From December 31st 2012, the number of psychological therapy sessions eligible people can receive through Medicare is 10 individual and 10 group sessions per calendar year.
To get a referral you will need to make an appointment with your GP to complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan. It is advisable to tell the doctor’s receptionist that you are requesting a referral to a psychologist as the GP needs approximately 30 minutes to discuss the plan with you and fill in the required paperwork. The current Medicare rebate for an individual psychology session under a Mental Health Treatment Plan is $84.80.

More information on Medicare can be found on the Government Human Services website at www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/subjects/medicare-services.
